Beyond behavior

Understanding sensory processing

Have you ever wondered why your child reacts strongly to certain sounds, textures, movements, or everyday situations? Or why something that seems simple to you can feel overwhelming to them?

Sensory processing is the way our nervous system receives, organizes, and responds to information from our bodies and the world around us. When sensory information is difficult to process, it can affect how a person feels, behaves, learns, and participates in daily life.

Beyond the five familiar senses

Most of us are familiar with sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. We also rely on internal sensory systems to help us understand our bodies and navigate the world.

  • Vestibular sense: Helps us maintain balance, understand movement, and know where we are in space.

  • Proprioception: Helps us sense body position, movement, and how our bodies are moving.

  • Interoception: Helps us recognize internal signals such as hunger, thirst, fatigue, pain, and the need to use the bathroom.

When sensory processing affects daily life

Some people process sensory information comfortably and move through their surroundings with ease. For others, certain sensations may cause discomfort, confusion, or difficulty recognizing what their body needs.

When sensory needs go unrecognized, behaviors may be misunderstood as laziness, defiance, inattention, or simply being difficult. Looking at sensory processing can offer another perspective and help families respond with greater understanding.

Anyone can experience difficulty with sensory processing. I offer assessments to individuals of ALL ages.

What is a sensory processing assessment?

A sensory processing assessment is an opportunity to explore how sensory differences may be affecting a person’s behavior, regulation, learning, or daily activities.

Through an assessment, I can provide parents and families with information about sensory processing and insight into possible connections between sensory needs and everyday challenges. My goal is to help you better understand and make more informed decisions about next steps.

Who is this for?

Sensory processing assessments may be helpful for people of all ages who are wondering:

  • Why do certain sounds, textures, or environments leave me feeling overwhelmed

  • Why are transitions, getting dressed, bedtime, or other daily activities sometimes so difficult?

  • Could sensory differences be contributing to challenges with behavior, focus, or emotional regulation?

  • How can I better understand what I or someone I care for may be experiencing?

A note about my services

I provide sensory processing assessments and information for adults, parents, and families. My approach is neurodivergent-affirming, with a focus on understanding individual sensory experiences and providing insight about feeling comfortable in one's own body.

I am not currently offering ongoing sensory integration or sensory processing therapy through a clinic.

If you are looking for ongoing sensory therapy, I can help you understand what an assessment may offer and discuss appropriate next steps.

If you have questions about sensory processing or would like to explore an assessment, contact me for a complimentary 15-minute consultation.
